But I'm a Cheerleader
"Silly Faggot - Dicks are for Chicks"  --  A sign carried by Natasha Lyonne as Megan, carrying a sign denouncing homosexuality as part of her 'rehabilitation' at True Directions

Don't let the homophobia in the above quotation fool you.  But I'm a Cheerleader is a movie all about how it's okay to be gay, and managing to make the audience laugh out loud while driving its message home gently but firmly.

Natasha Lyonne stars as Megan, the title character who finds herself the victim of an 'intervention' as her family and friends are concerned that she is lesbian and needs to be shown the error of her ways.  She finds herself sent off to a reindoctrination camp called "True Directions" where she is to be taught how to be straight.

That such camps exist shows how ignorant some parts of our population continue to be, ignoring all of the evidence that sexual preference is a product of nature rather than nurture.  However, leaving the editorializing aside, Cheerleader makes fun of the whole concept of reeducating gay teens to make them straight.  Yes, we see stereotypes among the enrollees at True Directions, but we're laughing at the camp and not the stereotyping or any victimization.  Ru Paul Charles and Cathy Moriarity are nothing short of hysterical as the counselor and director respectively of this place.

You'll laugh.  I did.
