This is not what it appears from the trailer. Then again director David Fincher seems to thrive by making movies where things are not as they seem. That's what he gave us in Seven and in The Game.
Brad Pitt (Tyler Durden) and Edward Norton (Jack) are the name stars of Fight Club and both are strong in their respective roles as the visionary who is leading the journey and the harried white collar worker along for the ride. To tell you too much about their characters and their relationship is to spoil the experience. Again a trademark of Fincher's films, there is much that happens that you should not know going in, for it detracts from the experience, much like reading the book before seeing what kind of movie it is made into.
Helena Bonham Carter is Marla, an interesting character that becomes involved with both of the leading men. Meatloaf plays a character who like Norton's "Jack", comes under the influence of Pitt's visionary "Durden".
From the trailer you would think this is a movie about underground fight clubs. While there is much fighting and it is as gory as boxing without gloves can get, that's not the focus. There are much bigger fish to fry and as the plotlines weave together, Jack and Marla are in more jeopardy than Jack may be capable of handling. His resolution of the conflict between he and Tyler Durden is surprising and amazing.
This is a movie where the visuals and the sound quality are important, so seeing it while in the theaters is best.
