Adam Sandler brings us yet another story about a misguided individual in need of redemption. It is a formula that has worked well for Sandler at the box-office, turning him into the surprise star of the late 90s.
In this vehicle Sandler is "Sonny Koufax", a real pain in the ass kind of guy. He doesn't really work at any kind of serious job, managing to make ends through his part-time work as a toll collector and from earnings he gets on a lawsuit settlement he was paid. His girlfriend has had it with his total failure to accept responsibility and dumps him. When he finds a child on his doorstep, he decides this is a golden opportunity to show some responsibiilty, even if the kid isn't his. Which it isn't. The boy is the son of Sonny's roommate, who just left on a long business trip.
When Sonny's girlfriend isn't impressed by this change in his life, he finds that he's stuck with the kid and that raising a kid is a lot more work than he had possibly considered. It is here that the laughs really begin, as Sonny and his ward, Julian, learn a lot about life together.
Along the way, Sonny meets a new woman. Someone better than "Vanessa", his ex, who is off with a new boyfriend (a much older man with a "5 year plan"). Layla Maloney is the obligatory love interest, and Joey Lauren Adams is good in the role. She's an environmental lawyer and part of Sonny's growth curve he begins to realize that he can't go on as he's been going, if he wants to have any kind of relationship with someone like her.
So, you have the same things that are present in any Adam Sandler movie. Lots of laughs, some scatalogical, some not quite so bad. A morality messaage, although we're not beaten about the head and shoulders with it. A growth arc for Adam's character, who has something to learn. In this case, accepting responsibility. The good thing about Sandler's formula films is that we get enough laughs to make seeing them worthwhile. As long as he keeps us laughing, I suspect he will continue to provide boffo box-office for the studios.
